4 presentations from ReConf 2018 that I would like to see

Well - here is at least the selection of lectures that have made me particularly curious and that I would like to attend on March 6 and 7 if possible. Incidentally, this year I will be attending on behalf of Jama Software at ReConf 2018 and, in addition to my presentation "Agile system modeling: a contradiction in terms?" will also give a lecture sponsored by Jama: "Functional safety and agile, is that possible?“

Themes & Tracks

The motto of ReConf 2018 is "Breaking new ground". This is indeed necessary, as the methods that have worked well so far are slowly reaching the limits of scalability. More powerful methods, on the other hand, often only make sense above a certain size/complexity for cost reasons. However, we are slowly reaching a point where the market is demanding a change.

The topics can also be assessed well via the tracks. This time there are:

• Agile (2x) - There is no end to it. Agile is still a hot topic. This shows that it is probably easier to talk about it than to introduce it. And what can I say? My two presentations are also about agility.
• New paths (2x) - The presentations on the conference theme can be found here and, as expected, a colorful bouquet of ideas.
• MBSE - Model Based Systems Engineering is one of these methods, which often only make sense above a certain size. MBSE is not a new approach, but is increasingly being used to deal with today's complexity.
• Transformation - Knowing where you want to go is the first step. But change is still difficult because the inertia of people and organizations has to be overcome. Transformation is therefore necessary in order to break new ground.

I have chosen a presentation for each of these four topics - here they are:

Agile: Sneaker meets suit - coordinating requirements between agile and non-agile stakeholders

I have already written several times that the human factor is one of the biggest challenges in systems engineering. I therefore welcome presentations that explicitly address the different types of people.

New paths: Model-based requirements engineering - can it also be agile?

Well, not only a new way, but also agile! But this presentation interests me simply because my presentation is also about agile modeling.

MBSE: MBSE as a new way or the same only different?

And now modeling without agile. Aviation has often been a driver of innovation, and anyone working in the field of functional safety can certainly learn a thing or two here. The presentation is explicitly about the Standard RTCA DO-331 which supplements the well-known DO-178C standard (guidelines for the certification of avionics software). Heavyweight? Perhaps. But still relevant for anyone who deals with functional safety.

Transformation: Agile management with OKR at BROCKHAUS AG - A practical report

I worked in US companies in the 90s and got to know management by objective: the goal is set and the employee has the freedom to implement it as they see fit. Objectives and Key Results are a further development of this principle, whereby the targets are quantified. I consider this management approach to be extremely efficient and pleasant, and the Tour of Dutywhich I recently reported on. All in all, an important topic.
