What is a Barcamp?

A barcamp (or unconference) is a conference organized by the participants themselves. This has already been discussed on these pages a lot written. If you've never heard of a barcamp before, you can check out the Barcamp 101 have a look.

You don't have to organize your own session at a barcamp. But those who do usually get more knowledge than they would pick up at a good conference. This is because the participants organize themselves and accordingly take part in sessions that interest them - and where there are usually not only people asking questions, but also experts.

Barcamps have been around for a long time. However, since the GfSE took over the systems.camp last year, it has reached a new level of professionalism. The systems.camps organized by GfSE in Munich and Berlin this year were a great success.

Small frame, small costs

In contrast to a "real" conference, size is not everything at a barcamp, quite the opposite: the barcamp is intended to create a more intimate setting that allows for a carefree professional exchange. For this reason, the number of participants is usually limited; 40 tickets are provided for systems.camp Nord.

Of course it can be bigger, and barcamps on other topics (outside systems engineering) sometimes have hundreds of participants. But that doesn't suit our concept.

Also important for us: We keep the costs low and only cover the catering: The early bird GfSE ticket costs €30. We have also deliberately scheduled the camp on a Saturday. The aim is to attract people who are enthusiastic about their profession and their work as a systems engineer. Even if the employer does not play along, there should be no time or financial barriers to participation.

More camps

The systems.camp is next in line. But there are a few more in the pipeline:

• 24.2 2018: systems.camp south - The systems.camp takes place several times a year in different parts of the world. In February it is Munich's turn. This camp is organized by Colin Hood organized in such a way that it can be combined with the Munich Openspace on the topics of functional safety and requirements engineering.
• 19-20.10 2017: RE/FS camps - Similar to last year, Jörg Hermes and Maik Pfingsten are also organizing their camps on the following topics Functional safety and Requirements Engineering in Cologne.
• 2018-11-18: Modeling Craftsmanship Camp - The page is not yet available, but make a note in your calendar: Like last year, Stephan Dankers is organizing a barcamp on modelling in Hanover.
