Excuse me? VW is founding a new software company together with Rivian? Don't they already have one, Cariad? The investment of five billion US dollars has rightly made waves. Incidentally, this is not the only deal in this direction; the partnership with Xpeng has made fewer waves. Many are wondering whether this investment makes sense - and what the venture with Rivian means for Cariad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

First the facts: Rivian<\/a>a new manufacturer of electric cars from the USA, is still in the red. This is set to change at the end of the year<\/a>. Rivian already sold its first vehicles in 2021 and has now delivered more than 50,000 vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasizes that the activities should be complementary to previous activities and explicitly mentions Cariad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen's goal is to become the global market leader in electric vehicles by 2030. Impact on Cariad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cariad, Volkswagen's software subsidiary, plays a central role in the Group's digitalization strategy. The company was founded to bundle and accelerate software development across the entire VW Group. The joint venture is intended to complement Cariad's work, at least according to CEO Oliver Blume. Only time will tell whether this will be the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also interesting that only the VW brands VW and Audi are mentioned, but not Porsche, for example. It is pure speculation as to whether the VW Group is deliberately leaving the door open for other implementation options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Partnerships in the automotive environment make a lot of sense. The development costs of software in particular are so high that good cooperation could drastically improve reuse and thus increase quality and reduce costs. It also makes sense to rely on a partner who has a proven understanding of software and can also put it on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only time will tell whether this strategy will work at Volkswagen. There will certainly be internal resistance, both from within the Group and especially from Cariad. Leadership qualities are required here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
