We must first learn to lead ourselves before we lead others.

This is the 4th part of the series: 5 guiding principles for engineers to achieve success and fulfillment in their profession.

Contents: Introduction | 1. framework | 2. good work | 3. lead | 4. agile | 5th way

Guiding principle 3: Leading correctly

Why?

In order to reach a goal, or to move in the right direction at all, we need guidance. With a good framework (Guiding Principle 1), we have hopefully created a "map" that shows us the goal and the rough path to get there. But we need guidance to implement it.

First of all, we have to lead ourselves. In a professional environment, we usually have a superior. A good boss leads us with our personal goals in mind. But a bad boss doesn't take our personality into account at all, or doesn't lead at all. Then we have to become active ourselves.

And if we ever have to lead a team ourselves, then we have to lead other people.

How?

There is a huge amount of literature on the subject of leadership. But when it comes to leadership in the context of your own career path, the following three books have helped me a lot:

The Alliance: This book recommends following your own career path in small stages. The author Reid Hoffman calls these stages a "tour of duty", a term from the military. A tour of duty is usually 1-3 years long and has a clearly defined result (e.g. product launch). This stage planning gives us a clearly articulable result for our CV each time. The book is available from Amazon, here my review with more details.

Radical Candor: This book urges us to communicate openly and honestly, even if this is sometimes difficult. This is important in any communication, whether with a boss or a team. We humans have a habit of avoiding difficult situations. But in doing so, we turn a small problem today into a big problem tomorrow. (Amazon)

Measure what Matters: This book describes Objectives and Key Results. This is a concept for synchronizing the goals of people and teams, even in large and fast-growing organizations. This approach helps us to manage large departments or even corporations. (Amazon)

What?

To be successful and fulfilled in our careers, we need to lead properly. The type of leadership we need will change over the course of our career. Right from the start, we need to lead ourselves. In a professional environment, I therefore recommend defining a tour of duty for each stage. The further we get, the more important communication becomes. I therefore recommend practicing radical honesty right from the start. And should we find ourselves in a situation where we have to lead hundreds or thousands of people, OKRs provide a robust framework.

Note: The links to Amazon are affiliate links.

Today it's all about the third guiding principle, to lead properly.
