At first glance, this sounds like an obviously good idea. But what actually is good work? Good for whom? In the video and in the text, I look at research findings, some of which are very surprising.

This is the 3rd part of the series: 5 guiding principles for engineers to achieve success and fulfillment in their profession.

Contents: Introduction | 1. framework | 2. good work | 3. lead | 4. agile | 5th way

Guiding principle 2: Be really good at work

Why?

Being good at work is good for us: we feel good and it helps us progress in our career. It is also good for the employer if we are good at work: It usually contributes to the company's success. But for these reasons, we should take a closer look at how we can implement this guiding principle.

How?

By far the most exciting book I have ever read on this topic is Great at Work (Amazon) by Morten Hansen. This work is a systematic study that examines why some people and organizations do above-average work. The answer consists of the following seven points:

Anyone who combines enthusiasm (passion) and purpose in their job has found the most important cornerstone for success

Do less, then obsess - We should think carefully about what we do and then pursue it with heart and soul. Saying "no" at the right time is important to achieve professional success.

Redesign your work - Have the courage to adapt your working environment if you are not making progress. Do you have the wrong tools? Then get the right ones.

Don't just learn, loop - This point reflects what we achieve with agility: it is not enough to do one thing over and over again to get better. We also have to use a feedback loop to ensure that we really are getting better.

Passion + Purpose - In my opinion, this is the most important factor for your own career path. Enthusiasm (passion) for your work is important. But meaningfulness, or purpose, is just as important. If you manage to combine the two, you've hit the jackpot!

Forceful Champions - In order to realize our calling, we have to convince other people.

Fight and Unite - To be really good at work, we have to allow other opinions and open discourse, even if it gets loud. But once the team has made a decision, the team must unite behind that decision.

Correct Collaboration - Collaboration is not always good. If we involve too many people too early, communication can quickly wear us out. Of course, silos are not good either. The point is that it depends on the right degree of collaboration.

What?

In order to apply this guiding principle, we must regularly analyze our working environment with regard to the points just listed and work on our weaknesses. Furthermore, we should regularly compare point 4 (Passion + Purpose) in particular with our framework (Guiding Principle 1).

Note: The links to Amazon are affiliate links.

This is the 3rd part of the series on Guiding Principles for Engineers, which deals with the second guiding principle, be good at work.

[47,141
684,686,267,183,171
post-4956","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ausbildung","category-menschen","tag-5-leitprinzipien","tag-arbeit","tag-karriere","tag-prinzipien","tag-video
["GET
