The MESCONF modeling conference will take place in Munich on 22 and 23 June. However, the topic of AI is dominant: on the one hand through a keynote speech by Jan Seyler from Festo. On the other hand, I will be offering an open space session on the topic of AI &amp; MBSE. Together with the participants, I would like to work out where the most potential lies. Below is a list of 8 ideas in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keynote speech by Jan Seyer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/mesconf.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MESCONF<\/a> is now an established two-day conference on MBSE. This year it is taking place in Munich on the Infineon campus. There are relatively few presentations; the majority of the event consists of open space sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jan Seyler has been head of the Control Engineering and Artificial Intelligence department at Festo Research and Pre-Development since 2020. He is also a lecturer for IoT and AI at the DHBW in Stuttgart and the University of Applied Sciences in Esslingen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his lecture <a href=\"https:\/\/mesconf.de\/programm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The way to AI building machines<\/a> Jan explores the potential that the combination of generative, evolutionary design and AI models can offer for the development of technical components and mechanical engineering. First research results will be shown and challenges will be discussed based on these results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Festo may be better known for professional tools in the trade, but it has often <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PCogAfT9C1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made waves in the field of robotics and AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open Space on AI in MBSE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Open Space format has a certain similarity with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/barcamp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barcamps<\/a>Participants primarily organize themselves on site. However, interested parties can also submit topics in advance. My planned session on <a href=\"https:\/\/mesconf.de\/schedule\/open-space-einfuehrung-und-marktplatz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI in product development and MBSE<\/a> is already listed on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this Open Space, we want to collect constructive, specific ideas. AI includes many things: \"boring\" technologies such as image or text processing, but also technologies that are not yet available such as Decision Intelligence or Physics-Informed AI. The currently hyped generative AI (such as ChatGPT) is ultimately just one of many AI technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-systems-engineering-trends wp-block-embed-systems-engineering-trends\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttp:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/ki-im-mbse-herausforderungen\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-systems-engineering-trends wp-block-embed-systems-engineering-trends\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttp:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/peter-lieber-ohne-vision-ist-mbse-nicht-realisierbar\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last two years, I have gathered a lot of knowledge and feedback from the field on this topic. Here is a list of ten promising ideas as an incentive. I look forward to exploring many more on site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 ideas for the use of AI for MBSE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Comparison of new input with the system model<\/strong> - Emails, PowerPoint slides, requirements and much more: a lot of non-formal information is continuously exchanged in a project. With AI, we could continuously scan this and look out for gaps or contradictions and point these out to the stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preparing and analyzing information for people<\/strong> - MBSE is a challenge for many stakeholders, as the models are not always easy to read and understand. Here, a chatbot could drastically increase acceptance in order to ensure intuitive access to the MBSE model for all stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extract parameters from texts and compare them with the model<\/strong> - Parameters such as speed, weight and much more play a major role in almost all complex products. AI can extract parameters from texts and compare them with the system model. This idea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valispace.com\/ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valispace already shows in a video<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modeling textual content<\/strong> - Developers must further develop the system model based on changes or new requirements. This is where AI could make suggestions. I showed what this could look like at the ReConf last month and presented it in this video.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode lazyload\" id=\"video-4829-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/semiant.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com\/2023-reconf-semiant-promo-de.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/semiant.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com\/2023-reconf-semiant-promo-de.mp4\">https:\/\/semiant.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com\/2023-reconf-semiant-promo-de.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maintain traceability<\/strong> - One of the central aspects of product development is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/traceability-2\/\">Traceability<\/a>. We have to create and maintain these in both requirements management and MBSE. The benefits are great, but maintenance is often a chore. AI can relieve us here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Synchronize and use ontologies<\/strong> - In order to master the complexity of the development process, more and more often <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/ontology\/\">Ontologies<\/a> worked. Regardless of whether these are used at product or process level, AI can support their use through maintenance or visualization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk management<\/strong> - This is a fairly large area in which AI can help with various approaches. Firstly, AI can classify texts, including as risks. Identified risks can be clustered by AI, allowing similar risks to be mitigated in a bundled manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Variant management<\/strong> - One of the major topics in MBSE is effective variant management, for example through interchangeable subsystems. Variant management is complicated but not creative and therefore a candidate for automation with AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Until the MESCONF Open Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last two years, I have had around 150 discussions with stakeholders from systems engineering and I am convinced that the ideas shown here are just the tip of the iceberg. A lot is happening in MBSE (keyword <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/sysml-v2-faq\/\">SysML v2<\/a>) and AI. However, I see comparatively little in the combination of these two disciplines.
