It is the result of generative design with the description: \"Expressive oil painting of a human and a robot in space standing on a meteor with stars in the background and an eye floating in the sky.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is generative design. But is it creative? And what does it mean for systems engineering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is generative design?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative design is an iterative design process in which a program generates outputs based on predefined framework conditions. This output is not adopted, but usually serves as a starting point for the next work steps, which are often part of the iterative process. The output can be further processed by humans or machines. For example, results are often placed in a test environment to evaluate the performance of the result. With each iteration, the designer learns to refine the program to get closer and closer to the design goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result can be images, sounds, architectural models, animations and much more. It is therefore a quick method for exploring design possibilities. This can be used not only in art (see cover image), but also in architecture, design and many other domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative design can drastically accelerate the development process to find optimal solutions. It mimics nature's evolutionary approach to design through genetic variation and selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DALL-E<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I'm not really good at painting. Nevertheless, generative design enables me to create a passable picture in the style of expressionism. For the cover picture I used the system <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.openai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DALL-E from OpenAI<\/a> used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DALL-E enables me to realize my ideas even without much experience in painting. And that brings us to the subject of creativity: the creative content is no longer in the brushstrokes, but in the text I write. DALL-E only contributes \"experience\". The experience is in a machine learning model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was able to experiment with the texts until I had a result that I was happy with. In addition, this process can be used to develop solutions for significantly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/complexity\/\">more complex problems<\/a> can be created. On the one hand, because the dependency on specialists is drastically reduced (in this case: painters), and on the other hand, because a much larger solution set can be examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers of software tools have already begun to supplement their tools with extensions for generative design. Here is an example<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case study: Generative design in CAD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New manufacturing techniques such as \"3D printing\" open up new possibilities for designers of mechanical components, in particular weight reduction. Furthermore, it does not require any design specifications (design space), only the framework conditions of the design. This allows generative design to explore possibilities that are no longer accessible with the traditional approach due to the design specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To answer the question in the title once again: No, generative design is not creative. Creativity is merely postponed, making it easier for non-experts to participate in the creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative design has the further advantage that we can examine a much larger number of designs, which helps to master the complexity in development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The example from the CAD sector shows how we can use generative design in systems engineering. I suspect that we will see many new use cases in the coming years.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Generative design is an AI-based iterative design process.
