{"id":4528,"date":"2022-11-17T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/?p=4528"},"modified":"2022-11-16T15:04:20","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T14:04:20","slug":"artemis-starship-comparison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/artemis-starship-vergleich\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Artemis launches: What does this mean for SpaceX Starship?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week (on November 16, 2022), NASA reached a milestone with the successful launch of Artemis 1: The rocket developed by NASA for lunar missions has taken off on its first (unnamed) test flight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot of praise in the tech community, but also a lot of criticism: Artemis has been assembled from old parts of the space shuttle. The development and launch costs are orders of magnitude higher than those of SpaceX, whose Starship could perform similar missions to Artemis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something to the criticism. Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that Artemis has a right to exist. Here is the reasoning behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Artemis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Artemis program was announced by the Trump administration in 2019, 50 years after the first man set foot on the moon. At the time, America was not the only country to rediscover the moon. China had announced a manned mission to the moon at the time and many other countries were planning unmanned missions. In addition, America did not have to start at ground zero. In particular, Artemis should start where the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constellation-Programm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Constellation program<\/a> (2005-2011) had stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many reasons to return to the moon, scientific, political and commercial.  From a scientific perspective, the Moon is a museum littered with terrestrial rocks older than anything preserved on Earth today, as well as quantities of asteroids from space. In addition, the side facing away from Earth is excellent for astronomy as it is protected from Earth's electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a political point of view, not much has really changed since the 1960s. And economically, the moon has raw materials to offer (especially heavy hydrogen) and perhaps even tourism. This is one of the reasons why the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Launch_System\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Space Launch System<\/a>whose first rocket was the Artemis 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ezumz5CR2LY?feature=oembed\" title=\"Artemis I mission rocket launches\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\"  frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SpaceX Starship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast to the government-sponsored Artemis program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/spacex\/\">SpaceX<\/a> a private company. The aim of Starship is also much broader: Starship is intended to be a generic platform that can be used flexibly, from supplying the ISS to simple satellite launches, through to use for a manned mission to Mars. However, a moon mission fits seamlessly into these goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starship has not yet flown as a whole. A first suborbital test flight of the entire system (\"orbital test\") is planned for this year. The Starship is expected to reach almost orbital speed without entering orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Costs...<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artemis is heavily criticized for two reasons. The first and most important reason is the cost. Apart from enormous development costs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/space\/starship-rocket#:~:text=Starship%20launches%20have%20an%20estimated,cost%20%244.1%20billion%20per%20launch.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">each launch of Artemis will cost over 4 billion US dollars. Starship, on the other hand, is expected to cost just 10 million US dollars<\/a> cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The differences in payload, which also depend on the destination, are not easy to compare. <a href=\"https:\/\/everydayastronaut.com\/sls-vs-starship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Everyday Astronaut has calculated the cost of transporting one kilogram of payload to the moon<\/a> calculated: $20,000 for Artemis and $2,000 for Starship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">... Obsolete....<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second reason is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/science-and-technology\/2022\/08\/24\/nasas-space-launch-system-is-yesterdays-rocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artemis is based on technology from the 1980s, primarily the Space Shuttle<\/a>.  The distinctive orange tank, for example, is a stretched version of the shuttle's external fuel tank. Attached to the underside are four of the RS-25 engines that also powered the shuttle. On either side are two similarly stretched solid-fuel rockets, which are also variants of the shuttle boosters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of Artemis 1's engines has already been in space several times<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA did not actually want to go down this path. The driver was created by the US Congress. This was the only way Barack Obama managed to get the project off the ground. This protected the existing shuttle infrastructure. In Alabama in particular, where a large part of the shuttle was built, many jobs were saved in this way. Critics have called it the \"<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Launch_System#Criticism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Launch System<\/a>\" called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach to recycling was actually intended to save money. Instead, this approach caused delays and high costs: the launch was originally planned for 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">... and control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the last reason gives the Space Launch System a raison d'\u00eatre, at least as far as the American government is concerned: control, at various levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the end of the space shuttle, the USA has lost control of space. From a geopolitical point of view, this was very important for the USA. SLS was an attempt to regain this control. The fact that, ironically, SpaceX was involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dragon_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crew Dragon<\/a> has ensured this in 2020 is another matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the USA only has limited control over SpaceX. And that is certainly one of the reasons why Artemis is being pursued: Relying on a single provider is always risky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons for systems engineering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot to learn from what is described here. But I find the following two lessons particularly interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background: #7eb13d; padding: 20px; border-radius: 10px; color: white; font-size: 120%; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 300%; float: left; vertical-align: middle; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;\">1.<\/span>Not all requirements are technically<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If NASA had not met the requirement to secure jobs in Alabama, the Artemis program may have been terminated prematurely. As Systems Engineers, we must <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/9-stakeholders-of-the-system-architect\/\">Needs of all stakeholders<\/a> against each other. These compromises often don't feel right from a technical point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background: #7eb13d; padding: 20px; border-radius: 10px; color: white; font-size: 120%; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 300%; float: left; vertical-align: middle; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;\">2.<\/span>Reuse reduces risks, but not necessarily costs<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further developing something that works usually increases the likelihood that the system will work in the end. Therefore, the risks of further development are usually lower than those of a new development. At least in terms of functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, technology is developing enormously fast today. This gives rise to other risks, particularly with regard to competition. Competitors can build directly on new developments, e.g. new materials. And if the competitor can significantly undercut the market price, there is a risk of being left with the product. This is offset by the relatively high risks of a new development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Artemis vs. Starship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As is so often the case in systems engineering, there is no right and wrong, only better and worse.
