A week ago, PTC hosted a virtual user conference, Onshape Live 21, which, as the name suggests, was mainly about the web-based CAD software Onshape. But CEO Jim Hepplemann also had a lot to say about the overall strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dct8Z93vrHE?feature=oembed\" title=\"Introducing Onshape CAM Studio\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\"  frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onshape.com\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Onshape<\/a> was founded back in 2012. In 2019, the company was acquired by PTC for USD 470 million. PTC has invested heavily in Onshape, which has led to corresponding growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PTC is a classic portfolio company with tools for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/modeling\/\">Modeling<\/a> (Integrity Modeler, formerly Atego) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/requirements\/\">Requirements<\/a> (Integrity Lifecycle Manager, formerly MKS), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/what-is-product-lifecycle-management-plm\/\">PLM<\/a> and many more. But with portfolio companies in particular, it is exciting to find out something about the overall strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PTC vision: Product development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few years ago, PTC surprised everyone with the Group's focus on IoT with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptc.com\/en\/products\/thingworx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thingworx<\/a>.  What Jim Hepplemann talked about in his keynote is a further development of this vision. SaaS plays a central role in product development. Both in development and in the product, everything is networked on many levels. The devices are just as networked as the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, so good. But this vision in a product strategy is yet another matter. The keynote was initially about Onshape, but it is foreseeable that PTC will have to pull it through the entire product portfolio in order to be effective. This is not easy in a heterogeneous tool landscape that has formed through acquisitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comparison with IBM's approach, OSLC, is obvious. However, OSLC does not have the complexity of networking that PTC strives for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A multi-layered platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple orthogonal platforms in the Onshape world. At the design level, work can be shared in a way that I have not seen in any other CAD software. Interface management, versioning, etc. Absolutely impressive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collaboration goes hand in hand with this. Onshape includes impressive collaboration tools that enable distributed reviews, embedding of interactive images and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training platform: Onshape has a successful academic program. Onshape now has one million academic users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The platform of the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is still missing is two things: Firstly, there is the question of how the other PTC tools integrate into this platform strategy. Secondly, there is the question of how far this vision will be developed into a commercial platform that providers can use, just as retailers use Amazon or WordPress as a platform today.
