Next week the Modern RE will take place in Berlin. I'm looking forward to seeing many old and new faces there: At my presentation of a Case study on agile requirements management<\/a>or just like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what distinguishes modern requirements engineering from traditional requirements engineering? There are three pillars that I will present today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The pillars of modern RE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern requirements engineering is often associated with agility. Modern RE is also associated with \"Agile requirements management in practice\". To Agile requirements management<\/a> I have already commented on this several times, and this is certainly part of modern RE, but certainly not all of it. After all, agile approaches already exist since the 70s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pillar 1: Agility<\/span> <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, agility is one of several pillars that are necessary for modern requirements engineering. We are talking about agility in the sense of the agile manifesto<\/a>close cooperation, quick results, involving customers and dealing with changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, this is easier to live with in the software environment than with complex systems that consist of hardware and for which there are compliance requirements. And there will be more and more products like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pillar 2: Tools<\/span> <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Even 20 years ago, tools were important. But the first generations of tools, such as Rational DOORS, Caliber or Visure, are now reaching the end of their life cycle. These tools were incredibly innovative when they were introduced, as they enabled the big step from document-based to element-based work. They provided important functions such as versioning, baselining and traceability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These functions are still needed today, but new requirements have been added: Usability must be simple, collaboration and integration are a must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3rd pillar: Data integration<\/span> <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Given the complexity of modern products, it is becoming increasingly important to make the interrelationships explicitly visible. This means integrating data across tools. We are already familiar with traceability from the requirements, where it is extremely useful. However, comprehensive networking of information is enormously powerful, as it creates visibility and enables dependencies to be managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requirements are the linchpin of every system, as they are used for coordination. Sensible integrations link these with tests, design, portfolios, simulation models and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point no longer modern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And last but not least: Nothing remains modern. In this respect, terms such as \"Web 2.0<\/a>\" and \"Industry 4.0<\/a>\" make a little more sense because they are a little easier to place in time (we'll leave the buzzword factor aside). At the end of the 90s, it was also fashionable to use Rational DOORS. Revolutionary at the time, it now lacks many of the features required for \"modern requirements engineering\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, it is pleasing to follow the evolution of requirements engineering. After all, requirements are becoming increasingly important and this will not change for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
