Thematically, this article fits in well with SE-Trends, as both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/automotive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automotive industry<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se-trends.de\/en\/day\/agility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agile approach<\/a>\u00a0have been illuminated quite often.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas will be holding the workshop on October 25 at the ASK in Munich\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hood-group.com\/ask\/agenda\/#2933-15-30-r3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Build @ Hardware - Iterative assembly as the basis of an agile development strategy<\/a>\u00a0on (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hood-group.com\/ask\/anmeldung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To the registration<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Nothing stays the same<\/h2>\n<p>Agile methods such as Scrum or Kanban have been known and widely established in software development for years. Agile forms of organization such as LeSS or SAFe have been adopted in many places. However, when it comes to the development of mechanical, electronic and software systems, these approaches come up against traditional methods and forms of organization that have worked well to date. For the development of new systems with more \"intelligence\", however, this can often be insufficient or even the wrong approach in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>In the new automotive world, an agile approach is becoming \"state of the art\". One prerequisite for this is that the development of IT systems is aligned. In other words, the car is becoming a mobile supercomputer. Drive electrification will also ensure that control units for combustion engines will be less in demand than energy management systems. Digitalization is also advancing in electronics, <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transmission_Control_Protocol\/Internet_Protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TCP\/IP<\/a>-Buses and digital sensors are becoming the norm. Line structures that are less bus than star, but much more a complex network of buses and stars, are necessary today in order to meet the most diverse requirements. This target system change will also challenge the organizational form. However, it will also change the capability profiles of the actuators in system development.<\/p>\n<h2>From simple control loops to real-time parallel computing<\/h2>\n<p>Complex standards, such as Autosar or QNX, abstract the hardware and increase transferability to a wide range of microcontroller environments.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/System-on-a-Chip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SoC<\/a>The new solutions simplify circuit board layouts and make circuit purchasing (IP) more cost-effective than maintaining and developing your own circuit solutions. Observing this development, it becomes clear that the electronics programmer is increasingly becoming a computer scientist with an affinity for electronics.<\/p>\n<h2>Development into a supercomputer<\/h2>\n<p>One of the many institutes that foresaw the development of the car into a mobile supercomputer and researched this development is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.tu-clausthal.de\/forschung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Computer Science at TU Clausthal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Various projects were carried out there back in 2009 and a study was developed on this basis. It made the following forecasts for the further course of automotive development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2015:<\/strong>The car has become a mobile parallel computer with already very complex cabling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2020:<\/strong>All cable technologies are represented in the vehicle at the same time, i.e. shielded twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber optic, standard signal cable and power cable are required, making the cable harness heterogeneous and expensive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2030:<\/strong>Autonomous driving is ready for series production. By the standards of 2009, the car is a mobile supercomputer. It is driven by an electric drive on telematically controlled roads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As far as autonomous driving is concerned, the study does not seem to have anticipated the accelerated and exponential development. As of 2018, semi-autonomous driving is already in series production.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact on the organization of automotive electronics development<\/h2>\n<p>The reason why the car development process has developed the way it has is due to ongoing cost optimization based on Henry Ford's principle and deep supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>As the end customer, we might believe that the car manufacturer is the sole producer of our new vehicle. But here we overlook the complex, dynamic and sometimes even chaotic world of development with all its different players. All of these are involved in a new and further development process that arises between competition and cooperation and is subject to \"design to cost\".<\/p>\n<p>The primary organizational form of the development departments of large automotive and automotive parts manufacturers is both hierarchical and matrix-oriented. The organization of development projects is based on the so-called PEPs, the formalized product development processes. These blueprints structure the project plans and project tracking by management and quality departments down to individual tasks. Such a quality-oriented approach is standard today. It applies to all those involved in the supply chain who are under pressure to innovate.<\/p>\n<h2>Conways Law<\/h2>\n<p>Conway's Law states the following: \"Organizations that design systems are forced to produce designs that are copies of the organizations' communication structures\". This hypothesis originates from software development and has been proven in numerous studies. It is also evident in the world of vehicle development. There we can already see the first overarching organizational structures shaped by automotive architecture from a global perspective.<\/p>\n<p>If we go into the electronics subsystem and the component area, the cable network and the networking of the components present themselves as an overarching entity. Below this, we also find adjacent areas that have developed more or less in isolation. Examples are the engine, chassis or lighting system.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, simple vehicle status messages, which were limited to the ignition status and speed, were controlled by the instrument clusters. With each new function, another control unit was added. In the engine area it was an injection control unit, in the chassis there were ABS control units, and for the body, two control units for the front and rear were often integrated into the wiring harness. Why so complicated? Well - it was because the structure that had been developed was to be retained. There have also only been a few adaptations or changes in recent years.<\/p>\n<h2>Everything flows<\/h2>\n<p>Virtualization, modelling and simulation are increasingly finding their way into development. This is not only transforming the automotive industry - with all its development disciplines - into a software company. The trend is foreseeably global and all-encompassing. Objections come primarily from those responsible for testing and validation. Although they are already equipped in terms of IT technology with test automation and test data management, major changes in procedure are also to be expected here. Virtual validation plays a major role here. On the one hand, it allows early insights and, on the other, it makes late physical test runs superfluous. Although none of this is new, it has so far been severely limited by expensive computing and storage capacity.<\/p>\n<h2>New agile project organizations<\/h2>\n<p>The new forms of organization are based on \"crowd working\" and agile project implementation methods. Scrum is the agile method of choice in software development today.<\/p>\n<p>We can already see the first external indicators such as backlog technologies, ticket and change trackers. Although the interfaces to PDM systems and file synchronization are still dominating the discussion, we can best implement smaller changes in a collaborative, networked IT tool world.<\/p>\n<p>A current and very good opportunity to get to the bottom of this topic is offered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hood-group.com\/ask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\"Agile Systems Conference\"<\/a>which will take place in Munich on Oct. 24-25, 2018.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"autoren\">About the authors<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Andreas Kre\u00df<\/strong>is a Senior Consultant in the field of system engineering for IT and technical system development at HOOD GmbH.
