What is PolarSys?

PolarSys is twofold:

• An "Eclipse Industry Working Group", i.e. a working group at the Eclipse Foundation, membership of which is subject to a fee.
• A collection of tools for use in system development, managed by the group mentioned above.

The Industry Working Group (IWG) is backed by industrial heavyweights such as Thales, Airbus and Ericsson. They have been relying on open source for several years, as they have burnt their fingers on commercial tools, particularly due to risks such as vendor lock-in and long-term maintenance. They finance the development of the tools.

PolarSys has now given up on developing a tool for everyone. Instead, there is now PolarSys Solutions. These are solutions tailored to a specific problem that are based on the "high-quality" components from the PolarSys ecosystem. For example, there is "Papyrus for SysML" or "Capella" as concrete solutions for system development.
