Barcamps and similar events have been around for a long time - but last year it was felt there was a boomwith many topics related to systems engineering, such as modeling, functional safety and requirements. The transfer of systems.camps to the GfSE the sustainability of the format was underlined once again. The season starts in exactly two weeks with the Munich Openspace. The event is organized by Colin Hood and Claudia Bösewetter, with whom I spoke about the event.
From February 23 to 25, 2017, you will be hosting the Munich Openspace. What exactly is that?
The Munich Openspace is a series of barcamps on the topics organized on three consecutive days (Update: Click here for the 2018 event series):
- Functional Safety - February 23, 2017,
- Requirements Engineering - February 24, 2017 and
- Systems Engineering - February 25, 2017.
An Openspace is an unconference (also known as a barcamp) with a limited number of participants (maximum 50 participants per day).
It offers an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge, as well as discussions in a risk-free environment.

The agenda is set on the day of the respective Openspace by and through the participants. Everyone has the opportunity to bring along their current challenge or topic. An Openspace offers inspiration and new perspectives as well as a great opportunity to network.
Do participants have to bring their own topic?
Each participant has the opportunity to bring their own topic. However, this is not a prerequisite for taking part in the Openspace. Nevertheless, it is recommended: because your own topic guarantees that you can participate in the knowledge of the other visitors in a condensed form. Of course, you can also share your own experiences with others without bringing your own topic.
Colin, are you bringing your own topics to the Openspace?
I mainly look forward to meeting people who have different opinions. It's fantastic how the participants help each other and how open the discussions are. It's nice to see that people are willing to change their minds when the situation is looked at from a different angle.

Will there be a bridge between the individual days, or are they completely independent of each other?
There will be a get-together on Friday evening for all interested parties. The location will be announced on our website will be announced. The costs for this are borne by each participant.
What exactly does the cooperation with the GfSE look like?
The systems.camp in Munich is organized by GfSE and sponsored by Colin Hood Systems Engineering. We are very pleased that the systems.camp is now taking place for the 2nd time under the umbrella of GfSE. Everyone at Colin Hood Systems Engineering is a GfSE/INCOSE member. It is important to us to support the systems engineering community and help other systems engineers.
