Professor Matthias König: With modeling to the IoT

Matthias König

Matthias König is Professor of Embedded Software Engineering at the Minden campus of Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. His interests lie both in teaching and research in the fields of software engineering for embedded systems, Internet-of-Things, machine learning, computer vision and service robotics. He heads the IoT Lab at the Minden campus.

Matthias has kindly agreed to host the second Modeling Craftsmanship Camp on the premises of his institute. What this event is all about is best explained by the Review of the first camp last year.

 

What motivated you to hold the modeling camp at your institute?

The idea for this actually came from Andreas Willert. Andreas and I have been exchanging ideas for several years and, together with Stefan Tegeler, have established the bi-annual event series "Embedded Engineering Talks" at the Minden campus. Andreas told me that we were looking for a venue for the Modeling Camp, which had previously been held in Hanover. As I consider the topic of modeling to be very important and Minden is close to Hanover, I was happy to take up the idea of holding the modeling camp at the Minden campus.

Your main topic is IoT: Where does modeling play a role in this?

Modeling generally plays a role in development and actually in the entire life cycle of software. Of course, this also applies to IoT and CPS. Here, the interaction across all layers (e.g. device, connectivity, cloud, application) results in a complexity that should be included in the consideration from the outset.

How is modeling covered in computer science studies at the Minden campus?

Modeling is extremely important as an approach to the complexity of software that arises, for example, for complete IoT applications. At the Minden campus, computer science students learn how to use modeling throughout the development process, from UML and SysML to MDSE.

Which group of participants would you like to see at the modeling camp?

I would be delighted if the group of participants represented a good mix of both technical depth in the topic of modeling (beginners and experts) as well as students and experienced professionals.
