How AI accelerates product development

We have centuries of experience in product development. But the recent exponential increase in product complexity means that current development approaches are reaching their limits. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to overcome these limits. I am convinced that we can mitigate many challenges by combining MBSE and AI. I have explained why this is the case and how it works in a technical article in the Cutter Business Technology Journal, which I can offer my readers for free download.

Cutter Business Technology Journal - Navigating the Prospects and Perils of AI

The complete magazine can be can be downloaded free of charge (registration required). There is a lot of talk about AI at the moment. Of course, there's a lot of hot air involved. At the same time, we are still at the very beginning of tapping into the potential of AI. The articles in this issue substantiate the buzzword "artificial intelligence".

If AI is to be taken seriously and really considered useful, it must be implemented methodically with best practices.

Accelerating product development with AI

In my article, I outline four trends that are driving product complexity. These are:

  • Increasing share of embedded software
  • Networking of systems
  • Ever larger teams
  • Fulfillment of regulatory compliance requirements

AI has the potential to help us overcome the limitations of current development approaches. This is not the first time we have introduced new approaches. Systems engineering was established in the 1960s and in the early 2000s agile development. In large organizations, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is becoming increasingly popular. However, MBSE requires a high initial investment and often encounters cultural resistance.

This is where I see huge potential for AI-based solutions that offer some of the benefits of MBSE without the need for long, expensive training processes. When I look at the activity in the market, I am convinced that we are barely scratching the surface of what is possible.

Curious?

In the coming years, more powerful AI systems for product development will emerge, starting with written language processing. Initially, these systems will enhance traditional or agile development, but soon they will focus on helping with MBSE. This will not make MBSE experts obsolete, but it will significantly reduce their workload.

From July 5, 2021, I will be inviting the next round of beta testers to try out my virtual quality assistant Semiant. Register here if you are interested!

I am trying to become part of this movement myself. Semiant is a virtual quality assistant that derives a system model from written requirements and makes it accessible to users via an interactive glossary, thereby improving communication. I will be inviting the next round of beta testers from July 5, 2021. Register here if you are interested!
