26 MBSE tools and 10 methodologies: Which are the best, which are missing? (2025 Update)

Lists are incredibly useful. Having the right list to hand at the right time can save time and detours. The website MBSE4U, maintained by Tim Weilkiens and others, has recently migrated two lists there. These 26 MBSE tools and 10 methodologies are sure to be of interest to you and will continue to be maintained there.

After almost a year, I visited the lists again. It's exciting to see what has changed: Most entries have likes in the 1-2 digit range. But a few stand out:

The lists

The lists are not new: Tim Weilkiens created and maintained these lists years ago, albeit for a different online service. There, as with many other online services, the thumbscrews are tightened (advertising, etc.), the team has now decided to host the lists themselves.

The community is of course invited to inform the team of any additions and corrections. At the moment, however, this can only be done by e-mail.

Both the MBSE tools and methodologies can be "liked" without logging in. There is not much to see at the moment, as the lists have only recently been migrated.

Here, too, I would ask all readers to actively contribute with a few clicks.

Tools: From Digital Thread to SysML v2

At the moment, tools are divided into five categories, whereby a tool can be listed in more than one category, which in turn can have subcategories. However, I assume that more categories will be added in the future. The main categories are

• SysML v2 Tool: tools that support the latest version of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML v2) support.
• SysML v1 Tool: Tools for SysML v1
• Non-SysML Tool: Tools that do not support SysML but can still be used for model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
• Digital Thread: Tools that enable digital integration and the flow of information along the entire life cycle of a product.
• Open Source: Tools whose source code is freely accessible.

This list is certainly not complete, for example the tool recently presented here is missing Spicy SE.

Methodologies: From Arcadia to SYSMOD

The list of methodologies is somewhat shorter and is currently divided into just two main categories, SysML and non-SysML methodologies.

Wish list for the future

At the moment, the links of the individual entries lead to the corresponding source on the web: This can be a book, a manufacturer or a gitHub project. Unfortunately, there is neither an objective short description of the entries (at least not linked), nor the possibility to start a discussion in the context of an individual entry.

Nevertheless, the lists alone will certainly be a great help for many users, especially if they are really maintained. The infrastructure for searching and filtering is already in place.

Conclusion

MBSE4U is certainly a better place for these lists than any online service. In this respect, it's great that these lists have found a new home. I look forward to seeing how the lists of MBSE tools and methodologies develop over the coming months and years.
